In the area of culture this course is designed to help individuals assess the current culture within their department, understand that challenges faced, and creating a healthier culture within first responder units and departments. Additionally, this course focuses on core concepts of leadership and development of these characteristics within the high stress, high trauma settings that are first responder professions.
First Responder Trauma and Self-Care
This 4-hour course focuses on the complex trauma that first responders experience in the course of their work. Every day for first responders brings the potential to see a child draw their first breath as well as someone draw their last breath. With the ever-increasing trauma experienced by first responders, we have also seen increasing rates of depression, PTSD, and suicide accompanying those traumatic events. This course explores a cultural shift within law enforcement, fire, and EMS departments to reduce the impact of the traumas that are experienced, assist with shifting departmental culture, and how leadership can help save the lives of those who risk their life for the public.
First Responder Trauma and Self-Care with Peer Support
First responders face unique challenges in connection with the amount of stress and trauma they deal with each day in the course of their duties. These stresses and traumas paired with the perceived need to not discuss them or the belief what is seen should be easily accepted or ignored can lead to a culture where first responders lack self-care and lack professional connections with others to discuss what they have experienced and feel. 37% of the first responders surveyed for 2 primary studies had contemplated suicide nearly 10 times more than the typical American adult. This 12-hour course addresses the unique stresses and traumas, the culture, and self-care for first responders.
Additionally, this course assists with the creation of a peer support program that allows first responders to connect and address the emotions connected with the traumas and stresses of their role in protecting and serving as first responders.

Corrections Officer Specific Courses
Crisis Communication, Trauma, Suicide Prevention, and Self-Care
Deemed Best Practice by New Mexico Department of Health and a required course for every correction officer in New Mexico
This is a 4-hour training for corrections officers to assist with interactions with detainees affected by mental health and substance use disorders and best practices for working with these detainees. The purpose of this training is to increase knowledge and understanding of mental health and substance use disorders in the general public and incarcerated, assist with the reduction of stigma about mental health and substance use, and improve interactions that occur between corrections officers and detainees. Nurstead believes the ability to identify mental health and substance use allows a better understanding of how and when to use what tactics. Resolving these interactions, quickly and effectively, reduces the stress and trauma for officers and reduces the impact of those interactions on officer mental health. This training is designed to teach key factors and techniques to aid in suicide intervention and prevention for both detainees and officers.
This course has an underlying core focus overlooked in most crisis intervention training correctional officers attend, a focus on the officer and the impact the daily interactions, stress, and trauma experienced in correctional settings can have on officers. Research indicates that correctional officers experience significantly higher suicide rates compared to the general population and other professions, and they also face a greater risk of substance abuse due to the chronic stress and traumatic nature of their work environment; often experiencing higher levels of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than even military veterans. Due to these findings, Nurstead’s course looks at the complex trauma in correctional work, the stress experienced by officers, and how to address self-care and talk to other officers about the topic. Talking is a tactical tool, know when and how to use that tool to save lives.

This course is a great addition to Crisis Communication, Trauma, Suicide Prevention, and Self-Care to expand the understanding of what symptoms are being experienced by detainees and inmates and gaining a better understanding of how to use the crisis deescalation skills taught in that course.
